While in training, aviation pilots are always trained to “trust your

gauges”. It’s hammered into them to always rely on what their

gauges are telling them. Pilots also use visual reference, but that is

to supplement their gauges. And when they have no solid visuals,

gauges become crucial to survival.

Metrics are the business equivalent, used instead by managers as success gauges for every aspect of

the company culture. Attrition and employee turnover can estimate employee satisfaction while data

from organizational surveys can provide insight into company culture. And of course there are plenty of

qualitative data that managers use to evaluate employee performance.
